Dennis Barkway CBE – Chairman

As well as a career in the City from 1948 to 1986, Dennis Barkway became a councillor in 1968 representing Hayes ward in Bromley. In his capacity as councillor he chaired various committees and was elected Leader of the Council, a post that he filled for some 19 years in total.

His Chairmanship has included many awards for quality services, and leading the Board of Trustees through various development and improvement initiatives. Dennis also continues to serve on a number of charity committees and appeals raising significant sums.

Mark Oakley – Vice Chair

Mark Oakley is a partner with law firm Judge and Priestley specialising in commercial litigation including property disputes, and also helps manage the company.

Mark has a general enjoyment of sport and regularly plays golf and cricket.

He lives in Sydenham.

Councillor Nicholas Bennett

Nicholas is the Managing Director of Kent Refurbishment Ltd and Chairman, Beckenham Constituency Conservative Association. He was educated at Universities of London and Sussex.

Councillor in London Borough of Lewisham 1974-82 (Leader of the Opposition 1979-81) and member of the ILEA 1978-81.

After a professional career in education he was elected to Parliament as MP for Pembroke in 1987 and appointed a Minister at the Welsh Office in 1990 with responsibility for Health, Local Government & Planning, Housing and Social Services.

After the 1992 election he was adviser to Price Waterhouse and a member of the Further Education Funding Council for England. From 1998 – 2003 he was Chief Executive of the Association of Consulting Engineers. He set up Kent Refurbishment Ltd in 2003.

Mr Bennett chairs a court at SW Magistrates Court. He is a keen swimmer. His other interests include history, transport, and British cinema between 1930-60. He and his wife Ruth (councillor for Bromley Common and Keston Ward) live in Bromley.

Michael Evans

Michael is the Managing Partner of Madano, a strategic communications consultancy. Michael is an experienced communications practitioner who has advised a number of large companies on their communications challenges. His expertise centres around strategic communications and reputation management and managing complex issues as well as working on a number of areas relating to the energy and environment sector.

Before joining Madano, Michael was Principal Private Secretary to the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser and spent five years providing policy advice across a range of issues ranging from climate change and energy policy to health and biotech issues.

Michael is married with a daughter and lives in Bromley.

Isobel Gowan

Isobel runs her own business specialising in leadership and organisational development, currently working with clients in the NHS and other public sector organisations on a group and individual basis. She also works as an Associate for three other organisations and has an MSc in Organisational Behaviour. She previously worked as an NHS Chief Executive and also brings experience of the third sector, as she was chair of a national charity for 6 years. She enjoys running and has recently taken up road cycling.

Johnny Heald

Johnny Heald is Managing Director of ORB-International, a full service market research/polling agency. His area of specialism is social and political research, working for international governments and institutions in both in the UK and across the Middle East and Africa.

He has lived most of his life in Bromley and has three children at local schools.

Adrian Hollands

Adrian Hollands is a chartered accountant and senior partner of the Bromley office of Baker Tilly, a national firm of accountants. Having worked in the area for over 35 years, he is involved in a number of community groups including the Bromley Community Fund and Bromley Youth Music Trust.

Adrian is a keen sportsman and apart from playing football and squash follows his beloved Spurs around Europe.

He lives with his wife Ann in Beckenham.

Councillor Tim Stevens JP

Tim Stevens has been the councillor for Farnborough and Crofton ward since 2000 where he actively supports residents, always putting their interests first.

He has been Chairman of the Public Protection & Safety Committee for the last four years as well as sitting on the Council’s Licensing Committee.

Tim currently is also a local magistrate whilst running his own Bicycle Sales & Repair Shop and Property Company.

He is a keen, when time permits, golfer and cricket player, living in Chelsfield Village with his wife Melanie.

Christine Whatford CBE

Christine Whatford retired as Director of Education and Leisure with the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

She is Chair of the UK UNESCO National Education Committee and member of several government initiatives on social exclusion and children’s rights.

Christine is married with children and grandchildren and lives in Beckenham.
